Filter Fun!!

Filter Fun!!

We get a lot of questions about how to clean and maintain your hot tub.  There are several components that are necessary to keep your hot tub clean and clear and water filtration is at the top of that list.  The filtering system is one of the most important functions of your spa because it helps to keep your spa water clean, safe, and clear. So here are some fun filter tips I rounded up:

  • Clean your filter every one to three weeks…the more frequently you use your spa the more frequently you should clean your filters
  • Never wait longer than one month to clean your filters
  • A dirty filter does not necessarily need to be replaced, with regular cleaning and care a filter can last up to 12 months (filters really aren’t designed to last longer than 12 months though)
  • In order to determine whether your filter or cartridge needs replacing, look within the pleats of the filter for any build up of grime, dirt, and particles after cleaning it – if you do find any remnants the filter should be replaced
  • Its a good idea to always keep an extra set of filters nearby for two reasons:
    1. It’s good to rotate your filters every time you clean them, this way you are allowing more time for your dirty filters to soak and clean your filters and then more time for your filters to dry completely which will prolong the life of the filter
    2. Also there’s no down time while you are cleaning the filter, with a spare set of filters you can install the clean ones right away while you clean the dirty ones
  • The best way to clean your filter is to submerge it in a bucket of water and 8oz of filter cleaner (if your filter is very dirty you may need to double the amount of cleaner) then create movement by moving the filter up and down in the bucket which will mix the solution and clean the filter…soak the filter for 12-24 hours then rinse out any remaining debris with a garden hose, pressure sprayer or dishwasher (if you use a dishwasher do not use the heat/air cycle) and then allow the filter to air dry
  • Cleaning your filters regularly will prolong the life of your hot tub…an overloaded filter can interrupt the water flow of your tub and interfere with heating operations and the hydrotherapeutic intensity of your jets

The bottom line is that by regularly cleaning and rotating your filters, you are protecting your spa!!
